Can You Fly With Hemp Extract Oil?

Summertime means travel. Whether you’re flocking to see family, taking a work trip, or squeezing in a much-needed vacation, you may be packing your bags and headed to an airport-near-you sometime soon. As you pack to leave, carefully collecting your toiletries, you may glance at your amber bottle of hemp extract and pause to wonder, can you fly with hemp oil?

The answer is finally and definitively yes.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has updated their guidelines so that it is now expressly legal to fly with hemp-derived extract oil. This change comes following a headline-making report in May 2019 of a 71 year-old-grandmother who was hit with a felony charge at Dallas-Fort Worth airport for carrying hemp oil.  

Over Memorial Day weekend, TSA amended their policy on carrying cannabis, making these products allowable “with special instructions,” where they had previously been prohibited. The agency is specifically clarifying that hemp products made from hemp may now be carried on planes.

Prior to this change, TSA did not distinguish between psychoactive and non-active hemp-derived products. But with the 2018 Farm Bill making hemp federally legal, TSA saw it appropriate to update their guidelines to align with new federal regulations.

According to the TSA's new guidelines,

"Products/medications that contain hemp-derived oil or are approved by the FDA are legal as long as it is produced within the regulations defined by the law under the Agriculture Improvement Act 2018."

Hemp, hemp, hooray! Hemp is safe for the skies. U.S. domestic travelers can now breathe easy knowing they can take their favorite hemp products in-flight without any uncertainty or complications.
